
AI chipmaker Cerebras Systems closed a $1 billion Series H funding round on February 4, nearly tripling its valuation to $23 billion in just four months as investors bet billions on alternatives to Nvidia's GPU dominance. The Tiger Global-led financing underscores surging demand for specialized AI infrastructure as companies race to build the computing power needed for next-generation artificial intelligence systems.
The round drew participation from AMD, Benchmark, Fidelity Management & Research Company, Atreides Management, Alpha Wave Global, Altimeter, Coatue, and 1789 Capital. The deal marks Cerebras' second billion-dollar raise since September, when the company was valued at just $8.1 billion, reflecting the extraordinary capital velocity flowing into AI hardware companies positioned to challenge Nvidia's near-monopoly on AI accelerators.
The Wafer-Scale Advantage in AI Computing
Cerebras has differentiated itself through an unconventional architectural approach. The company's flagship Wafer Scale Engine 3 (WSE-3) processor contains 4 trillion transistors—19 times more than Nvidia's Blackwell B200 graphics card—by building chips on entire silicon wafers rather than cutting them into smaller pieces.
This wafer-scale design dramatically reduces communication bottlenecks that plague traditional multi-GPU clusters. Cerebras claims its approach delivers inference and training more than 20 times faster than competing solutions while using a fraction of the power per unit of compute. Leading corporations, research institutes, and governments on four continents have deployed Cerebras systems, with Abu Dhabi's G42 owning approximately 1 percent of the company and maintaining $1.4 billion in long-term purchase commitments.
The OpenAI Connection and Strategic Positioning
The timing of Cerebras' fundraise follows reports that the company signed a multiyear agreement with OpenAI worth more than $10 billion for up to 750 megawatts of computing capacity. The deal emerged as OpenAI explores alternatives to Nvidia for AI inference chips, seeking to diversify its hardware supply chain.
Reuters reported that Nvidia approached companies working on SRAM-heavy chips, including Cerebras and competitor Groq, about potential acquisitions. Cerebras declined and instead struck the commercial partnership with OpenAI, positioning itself at the center of the AI infrastructure buildout as OpenAI scales computing needs to support ChatGPT's hundreds of millions of users.
Challenging the Nvidia Monopoly

The company controls approximately 95 percent of the AI semiconductor market, with its H200 and Blackwell platforms anchoring most large-scale deployments globally.
