Building an AI agent is one thing. Keeping it running reliably at scale in a production environment is something else entirely - and that gap has been the primary reason enterprise AI agent adoption has moved more slowly than the technology itself.

Anthropic launched Claude Managed Agents in public beta on April 8, a suite of composable APIs that abstracts away the infrastructure work that typically delays enterprise agent deployments by months. Teams can now define an agent's tasks, tools, and guardrails - either in natural language or through a YAML configuration file - and run it on Anthropic's production infrastructure. The platform handles sandboxed code execution, authentication, session persistence, tool orchestration, context management, and error recovery.

What It Actually Does

Before Managed Agents, companies building Claude-powered agents had to provision their own servers, manage concurrent session limits, build secure execution environments, handle credential management, and design failure recovery systems before writing a single line of user-facing code. For most enterprise engineering teams, that setup takes months.

The new platform removes those requirements. Key features include persistent long-running sessions that survive disconnections, scoped permissions and guardrails developers define at configuration time, checkpointing for complex multi-step workflows, and session tracing built into the Claude Console that exposes every tool call, decision point, and failure mode for debugging. A multi-agent coordination capability is in research preview. A self-evaluation feature - also in research preview - lets developers define success criteria and have Claude iterate toward them, useful for tasks where quality requires judgment rather than binary pass/fail checks.

In internal testing, Managed Agents improved structured file generation success rates by up to 10 points over standard prompting approaches.

The Early Adopters

Notion deployed Claude directly into workspaces through Custom Agents, handling dozens of parallel tasks while teams collaborate on outputs. Rakuten stood up enterprise agents across product, sales, marketing, finance, and HR within a week per deployment, with agents accepting task assignments through Slack and Teams and returning deliverables like spreadsheets and slide decks. Asana built AI Teammates - agents that work alongside humans inside project management workflows, picking up tasks and drafting deliverables. Sentry paired their existing debugging agent with a Claude counterpart that writes patches and opens pull requests.

The Strategic Play

From an enterprise AI adoption standpoint, this is the move that often matters more than model benchmarks. The companies I have watched actually deploy AI at scale consistently hit the same wall: the models work in demos but the infrastructure to run them reliably in production is expensive, slow, and requires specialized engineering talent most teams do not have. Managed Agents is Anthropic's answer to that problem - and a direct bid for the sticky, long-term enterprise relationships that OpenAI's platform and Google's Gemini integrations have been building toward. Once production agents run on Anthropic's managed infrastructure, the switching costs become meaningful. That is the business model underneath the product announcement.
