Summary: Claude limits come in two kinds. Usage limits cap how much you can use Claude over time: every paid plan has a weekly limit, and most also have a five-hour session limit that starts with your first message (verified Ultra accounts have no five-hour limit). Length limits cap how much a single chat can hold, up to a 1M token context window on the newest models. Anthropic does not publish a fixed message count for any plan, and chats, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all draw from the same allowance.

Few things frustrate Claude users more than a "usage limit reached" message in the middle of real work. Anthropic changed its plan lineup again on October 30, 2026, renaming Max 20x to Ultra and dropping the five-hour cap for verified Ultra accounts, so many guides still describe plans that no longer exist.

This guide covers limits on every current plan, how the windows reset, context windows, Claude Code, what to do when you run out and API rate limits. Every figure was checked against Anthropic's help center, pricing page and developer docs on November 6, 2026.

What Are Claude's Usage Limits?

Claude's usage limits cap how much you can use Claude over a period of time, measured across every conversation you have. Anthropic's help article Understanding usage and length limits separates them from length limits, which cap how long one conversation can get.

The difference matters because the fixes differ: a usage limit means waiting, upgrading or paying for extra usage, while a full chat is solved by starting a new one.

Claude usage sits in one shared pool. Anthropic states that claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all count toward the same limit, so a long coding session leaves less room for chat later.

What Are Claude's Usage Limits by Plan?

Claude's usage limits scale with the plan: Pro is the baseline, Max gives 5x Pro, and Ultra gives 10x Pro per week with no five-hour limit once the account is verified. The figures below come from Anthropic's Claude pricing page and the Ultra help article.

Team plans cover groups of 2 to 150 people. On usage-based Enterprise plans, Anthropic's Team and Enterprise help article says there are no per-seat usage limits, because usage is billed at API rates as it happens.

Naming note: Max 20x is now Ultra. Anthropic's Ultra plan help article says existing Max 20x subscribers moved to Ultra automatically with no price change, and the plan formerly called Max 5x is now simply Max. Guides quoting "Max 20x" limits predate the change.

How Does Claude's Five-Hour Session Limit Work?

Claude's five-hour session limit controls how much you can use within a five-hour period that starts when you send your first message. According to Anthropic's help center, the limit resets in full five hours after that first message, not at a fixed clock time.

A worked example: send your first message at 9 AM and your session runs until 2 PM. Use your whole allowance by 10:30 AM and you wait until 2 PM for a fresh session.

The Free plan also has a five-hour session limit, and Anthropic's free usage article says the message count varies with demand.

Ultra is the exception: verified Ultra accounts have no five-hour limit. Anthropic verifies Ultra accounts automatically using factors such as account and payment history, and an account that isn't verified yet has a temporary five-hour limit until it is. To check, open Settings, then Usage: if there's no Current session bar, the account is verified.

How Does Claude's Weekly Limit Work?

Claude's weekly limit caps total usage across all models over a seven-day period and resets at a fixed time each week assigned to your account. Anthropic says that reset time stays the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription began.

Every paid plan has a weekly limit, including Ultra. Whichever limit runs out first stops you, so a heavy Pro or Max user can have session allowance left and still be blocked by an empty weekly pool.

Max and Ultra also carry a separate weekly cap for Anthropic's Fable models. Anthropic's Fable plan article says Max, Ultra and premium seat users can spend up to 50% of their weekly limit on Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 at no extra cost. That 50% is a ceiling inside the weekly limit, not extra allowance. On Pro and standard Team or Enterprise seats, Fable isn't included in plan limits and runs on usage credits from the first message.

Settings, then Usage, shows both: the Current session bar with time remaining, and your next weekly reset.

How Many Messages Can You Send on Claude?

Anthropic does not publish a fixed message count for any Claude plan, because usage depends on what each message costs to process. The pricing page says how fast you reach a limit depends on the model you use, how long your chats are and how large your files are.

The closest thing to a number is an estimate on Anthropic's Pro plan usage page: with short conversations of about 200 English sentences on a less compute-intensive model, a Pro user can expect around 45 messages every five hours, possibly more. The same page says Pro offers at least five times the per-session usage of the Free plan during peak hours.

Treat that 45 as a guide for light use, not a promise. A message with a long PDF, web search or extended thinking costs far more than a one-line question.

How Big Is Claude's Context Window?

Claude's context window on paid plans is up to 1M tokens on the newest models, with older models at 500K or 200K. Anthropic's article How large is the context window on paid Claude plans gives this breakdown for chat:

Context window (chat, paid plans)

Models

1M tokens

Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Opus 5, Sonnet 5.5, Sonnet 5, Haiku 5.5

500K tokens

Fable 5, Opus 4.8, Opus 4.7, Opus 4.6, Sonnet 4.6

200K tokens

All other models

Part of every context window is reserved for Claude's reply; Anthropic doesn't say how much.

With code execution turned on, Claude automatically summarizes earlier messages as a chat nears the limit so it can keep going. The full history is preserved, but longer chats use more of your usage limit, and a very large first message can still hit the length limit.

What Are the Claude Code Limits on Each Plan?

Claude Code has no separate allowance on subscription plans. Anthropic's Claude Code usage article says all activity in both tools counts against the same five-hour and weekly limits.

  • Free: Claude Code is not included.

  • Pro and Max: a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit, shared with chat. Max also has the separate Fable weekly cap.

  • Ultra: a weekly limit and a Fable weekly cap, with no five-hour limit once verified.

  • Team and seat-based Enterprise: Claude Code comes with every seat, premium seats get more capacity, and admins can enable usage credits when members reach their included limits.

  • Usage-based Enterprise: no per-seat limits; usage is billed at API rates.

Use in VS Code or another IDE counts the same way as terminal use. Run /status inside Claude Code to check your remaining allocation. Claude Code also has a context window of 1M tokens on every model in Anthropic's list, including Haiku 5.5.

Anthropic is gradually rolling out a grace period: if you hit the five-hour limit mid-response, you may see "Usage limit reached · wrapping up" while Claude finishes. Pro gets this once per week; Max can get it at each five-hour limit.

A caveat that catches Max and Team buyers: the monthly API credits included with Max, Ultra and Team plans can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps. New to the tool? Start with our explainer on what Claude Code is.

What Happens When You Hit Claude's Usage Limit?

When you hit a Claude usage limit, Claude stops responding until the limit resets, unless you upgrade or turn on usage credits. Claude warns you as you approach a limit and tells you when you've reached one.

You have four options:

  1. Wait for the reset. The five-hour limit resets five hours after your session's first message. The weekly limit resets at your account's fixed weekly time.

  2. Upgrade. Anthropic says upgrades apply immediately. Pro users can move to Max; Max users can move to Ultra.

  3. Turn on usage credits. Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers can keep working on pay-as-you-go credits billed at standard API rates. Enable them in Settings, then Usage, set a monthly spend cap or choose unlimited, and optionally turn on auto-reload. On Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, admins enable usage credits for members.

  4. Switch to API billing. In Claude Code, /login lets you switch from your subscription to a Claude Console account billed at API rates.

How Can You Make Claude Usage Last Longer?

The best way to stretch Claude usage is to send fewer, leaner messages: shorter chats, lighter models and only the tools you need. These tips come straight from Anthropic's help center:

  • Start new chats often. Every reply in a long chat re-reads the whole history, so a fresh chat for a new task costs less.

  • Batch your questions. Ask several related questions in one message, and don't re-upload files Claude already has.

  • Use projects. Project documents are cached, and Anthropic says cached tokens count less toward usage limits. Keep project instructions short and remove files you no longer need.

  • Turn off what you aren't using. Extended thinking, web search, connectors and extra tools all add cost. A lower effort level helps too.

  • Pick a lighter model for simple work. Less compute-intensive models stretch your allowance further.

In Claude Code, every enabled plugin adds tokens to each turn, as our Claude Code plugins guide explains, so disable the ones you don't use weekly. Our guide on how to use Claude covers projects and other features in more depth.

What Are the Claude API Rate Limits?

Claude API rate limits are separate from subscription limits and are measured per minute: requests per minute (RPM), input tokens per minute (ITPM) and output tokens per minute (OTPM). Anthropic's API rate limits documentation sets them by usage tier, and organizations move up tiers automatically as they build usage history.

Usage tier

Evaluation

Starting tier with lower limits until you build usage history

Start

$500

Build

$1,000

Scale

At the Start tier, Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 each allow 4,000 RPM, 2,000,000 ITPM and 400,000 OTPM. Claude Fable 5.x allows 4,000 RPM, 500,000 ITPM and 100,000 OTPM. Higher tiers raise these; Scale lists 13,000 RPM and 10,000,000 ITPM for Opus 5.5.

Limits refill continuously using a token bucket rather than resetting each minute. Exceeding one returns a 429 error, sometimes with a retry-after header. Cached input reads don't count toward ITPM, so prompt caching raises real throughput. Our Claude API pricing guide covers what those tokens cost.

Which Claude Plan Should You Pick for Higher Limits?

The right Claude plan depends on which limit you keep hitting:

  • You hit Free limits a few times a week: Pro, at $20 a month, adds Claude Code and at least five times Free's per-session usage.

  • You hit the Pro five-hour limit most days: Max gives 5x Pro on both the session and weekly limits for $100 a month. Turning on usage credits is cheaper if you only run over occasionally.

  • You run long agent jobs that stall at five hours: Ultra removes the five-hour limit for verified accounts and gives 10x Pro per week.

  • You're buying for a team: Team premium seats give 5x standard seats; usage-based Enterprise drops per-seat limits in favor of API-rate billing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Claude's usage limits?
Claude's usage limits cap how much you can use Claude over time. Paid plans have a weekly limit, and most also have a five-hour session limit that starts with your first message, while verified Ultra accounts have no five-hour limit. Usage in claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop counts toward the same limit.

How long does the Claude usage limit last?
The five-hour session limit resets in full five hours after the first message of that session. The weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week assigned to your account, which you can see in Settings under Usage.

How many messages can I send on Claude Pro?
Anthropic doesn't set a fixed message count. Its Pro plan page estimates around 45 messages every five hours for short conversations on a less compute-intensive model, and fewer when you use long files, long chats or heavier models.

Does Claude Code have separate limits?
No. On Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, Claude Code shares the same five-hour and weekly limits as Claude chat. Claude Code isn't included on the Free plan, and usage-based Enterprise plans are billed at API rates with no per-seat limits.

Can I keep using Claude after hitting the limit?
Yes, if you turn on usage credits, which let Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers keep working at standard API rates up to a monthly spend cap you set. Otherwise, wait for the reset or upgrade, since upgrades apply immediately.

The Bottom Line

Claude has two limits to track: a usage allowance that resets on five-hour and weekly windows, and a context window that caps each chat. Anthropic publishes the plan multipliers (Max at 5x Pro, Ultra at 10x Pro weekly) but no fixed message counts, so your real allowance depends on chat length, files, model and features.

If you keep running out, fix habits first: fresh chats, projects, lighter models, fewer tools. Usage credits cover occasional overruns; Max or Ultra make sense once you hit limits every week.
