Engineers at OpenAI experienced what sources described as "a rise in service disruptions" affecting GitHub availability throughout recent months, according to The Information. These outages interfered with development workflows at the ChatGPT creator, preventing teams from modifying code or coordinating projects during critical periods. The disruptions prompted internal discussions about creating an alternative repository system that would give OpenAI greater control over its core development infrastructure.
Microsoft acquired GitHub in 2018 for $7.5 billion and currently holds approximately 27 percent of OpenAI on an as-converted diluted basis. The tech giant serves as both OpenAI's largest investor and key technology partner through its Azure cloud infrastructure, making the decision to build a competing code platform particularly notable.
