Technology experts warn that millions of users who treated the nostalgic throwback as harmless fun inadvertently provided AI firms with precisely labeled decade-long datasets that are typically expensive and difficult to collect due to ethical constraints.

Sarah Saska, CEO of consultancy firm Feminuity, immediately recognized the data collection implications when the trend emerged in early January. The high volume of publicly available images with clear date labels makes it significantly easier to teach AI models how people, places, and things change over extended periods. These temporally paired datasets are exceptionally rare and valuable because they eliminate the time-consuming manual labeling process that typically requires human annotators to identify what each image depicts and when it was captured.

Nicolas Papernot, associate professor of computer engineering and science at the University of Toronto, emphasized that content appearing benign today could become sensitive in future years as technology capabilities advance in unpredictable ways.
