ATLANTA, Oct. 15, 2026 | CNN announced Thursday that it has signed a multi-year partnership with Google under which CNN will provide expanded content rights for experimental AI features in Google products and be paid for that use, according to Reuters. CNN did not disclose the payment amount or which Google products will use its journalism.

What CNN and Google Agreed

CNN’s announcement says the deal is meant to explore how generative AI can drive engaged audiences across CNN’s journalism. Sam Felix, CNN’s senior vice president of strategic partnerships and business development, said it is about “being compensated for the delivery and use of our unique intellectual property in connection with AI products.” He also said the partnership is “unlocking new pathways for audiences to access CNN’s unparalleled journalism,” per TheWrap.

CNN says the agreement fits its AI strategy of protecting its intellectual property while pursuing commercial AI partnerships. It says it has multiple commercial agreements in place and is in discussions with other companies, but it has not named them.

What Was Not Disclosed and the Wider Context

According to TheWrap, CNN did not reveal the payment amount, which Google products would use its reporting, or whether the deal includes rights to train AI models on its content. Google points to its news AI pilot program for background. TheWrap reports that Google announced that pilot in December 2025 with The Washington Post, The Guardian and Der Spiegel among the participants, testing AI-generated article summaries and audio briefings in Google News with links to the original reporting.

The deal arrives as publishers weigh how AI changes their traffic. TheWrap cites Chartbeat data showing Google Search pageviews to publishers fell 34% year over year. It also reports that on Oct. 1 a federal judge dismissed, without prejudice, Penske Media’s lawsuit challenging Google’s use of news articles in AI search summaries, which means Penske can refile.
