Microsoft Invests $60 Million in the Energy Department's AI-for-Science Push

Microsoft just wrote a check that says a lot about where it sees the next phase of AI's usefulness heading, and it isn't another chatbot feature. The company is investing $60 million in the U.S. Department of Energy's "Genesis Mission," a federal initiative focused on using artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific discovery, according to The Hill's reporting on the commitment.

The investment splits two ways. Forty million dollars will go toward Azure cloud and AI computing credits over three years to support large-scale AI and scientific workloads, while the remaining $20 million is earmarked to help translate that cloud and AI capacity into actual scientific outcomes, according to Microsoft's own blog post. Chris Barry, Microsoft's president of U.S. public sector industries, framed the stakes directly: "We are entering an era where AI and quantum don't just support the scientific process, they are essential to it."
