DALLAS, Oct. 7, 2026 | Southwest Airlines has launched a plugin inside ChatGPT that lets travelers explore destinations and shop for flights in the chat. The airline announced it Tuesday, Oct. 6. Customers can't complete a booking in ChatGPT yet.

The airline says the plugin is a first for a U.S. carrier. Southwest worked with OpenAI and Amazon Web Services on the launch and describes it as the start of a phased AI rollout across the customer journey.

What the Plugin Does

Customers open the Southwest plugin in ChatGPT to browse destinations and flight options, rather than moving between search engines, travel sites and airline pages. Southwest says this should make "the early stages of trip planning more natural, personalized and convenient," as quoted in a Zacks Equity Research report.

Travel Weekly reports that ChatGPT draws on Southwest's own flight inventory through the plugin, rather than piecing together schedules and fares from public search results. Users who want to buy a ticket are sent to Southwest.com to finish the purchase. Southwest has a page for the plugin at Southwest.com/chatgpt.

What Southwest Said

Sabrina Callahan, Southwest's Chief Digital and Marketing Officer, said in the company's release: "Customers are evolving how they plan travel, and Southwest is helping shape what comes next."

Lauren Woods, Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer, said: "We're creating secure, scalable AI foundations to add capabilities quickly and thoughtfully." Per the release, OpenAI and AWS supply the AI and cloud infrastructure, while Southwest contributes customer insights and operational expertise.

A Phased Rollout

The current launch covers discovery and shopping only. Southwest says full booking capabilities will expand over time as its AI features develop, and that it sees the plugin as a foundation rather than just a new sales channel.

The airline carried 134 million customers in 2025, according to the release, and operates the most nonstop domestic flights in the U.S. That scale makes any change in how people find and compare flights worth watching.

What This Means for Travelers and Airlines

For travelers, the immediate change is convenience: asking ChatGPT for trip ideas now pulls Southwest's own fares and schedules. For airlines, it is a test of whether a chat assistant becomes a front door for shopping, with the checkout still on the airline's own site. Travel Weekly's report did not mention other airlines launching comparable ChatGPT integrations at the time.
