Copilot pricing depends on which Copilot you mean. Microsoft’s consumer plans run from free to $99.99 a month, with Microsoft 365 Premium at $19.99. Microsoft 365 Copilot for work costs $30 per user a month paid yearly, and GitHub Copilot runs from free to $100 a month. Prices come from Microsoft’s and GitHub’s own pages, checked October 2026.
“Copilot” is the name of at least three separate products, and each has its own price list. Microsoft sells Copilot inside its consumer plans, sells a business version at $30 per user, and owns GitHub, which sells a coding Copilot that starts at $10. Searching “Copilot pricing” mixes all three.
This guide separates them. It covers what each Copilot costs, what the free tier includes, how monthly billing changes the business price, and how GitHub’s new credit system works. If you want to know what the tool does first, our guide to what Microsoft Copilot is is the place to start.

Is Microsoft Copilot Free?
Yes. Microsoft offers a free version of Copilot, with usage “subject to available capacity and limits.” Work accounts also get Copilot Chat at no extra cost with an eligible Microsoft 365 plan. GitHub Copilot Free exists too, with 2,000 completions and 50 chat requests a month.
Microsoft’s individual plans page does not itemize what the free consumer version includes, so the limits are not published as numbers. Copilot Chat for business is a smaller product than the paid one. It includes web-grounded chat but not Work IQ, which is how Microsoft 365 Copilot reads your company’s files and email, and it covers only limited use in Outlook.
Students and open source maintainers can also get free GitHub access. Copilot Student is free for verified students, and verified teachers and maintainers of popular open source projects may get Copilot Pro free. For other no-cost tools, see our guide to the best free AI tools.

How Much Does Copilot Cost for Individuals?
For individuals, Copilot is bundled into Microsoft 365. Personal costs $9.99 a month, Family $12.99, Premium $19.99 and Pro $99.99. Yearly billing saves up to 17% on Personal, Family and Premium. Premium and Pro raise the Copilot usage limits, and Pro is billed monthly only.
Plan | Monthly | Yearly | Copilot usage |
|---|---|---|---|
Personal | $9.99 | $99.99 | Higher than free |
Family | $12.99 | $129.99 | Higher than free, subscription owner only |
Premium | $19.99 | $199.99 | Extensive, with limited agentic AI |
Pro | $99.99 | Not offered | Highest, with agentic AI |
Two details matter before you pay. Family covers up to six people for storage and apps, but the Copilot AI features are for the subscription owner only. And Microsoft’s individual plans page does not list a plan called Copilot Pro, so Premium at $19.99 is the closest current offer. Personal, Family and Premium show a free trial, Pro does not, and all paid plans renew automatically.
The usage tiers have no published numbers. Microsoft describes them only as “higher than free,” “extensive” and “highest,” so you cannot compare the allowances in advance. Source: Microsoft’s individual plans page, checked October 2026.
How Much Does Microsoft 365 Copilot Cost for Business?
Microsoft 365 Copilot costs $30 per user a month paid yearly, on top of a qualifying Microsoft 365 license. Smaller businesses can buy Copilot Business at $21 per user a month paid yearly, currently discounted to $18, or $25.20 billed monthly. Monthly billing costs 20% more on every Microsoft business plan.
Business plan | Paid yearly | Paid monthly | Monthly premium |
|---|---|---|---|
Microsoft 365 Copilot Business (add-on) | $18 (list $21) | $25.20 | 20% over list |
Business Standard with Copilot | $23.50 | $28.20 | 20% |
Business Premium with Copilot | $32 | $38.40 | 20% |
Microsoft 365 Copilot (enterprise add-on) | $30 | Not shown | n/a |
The 20% premium is my arithmetic from Microsoft’s listed prices: $25.20 divided by $21, $28.20 divided by $23.50 and $38.40 divided by $32 each give 1.2. At 100 users, Copilot Business costs about $21,600 in the first promotional year, $25,200 a year at the $21 list price, and $36,000 a year for enterprise Microsoft 365 Copilot at $30.
The $18 Copilot Business price is a promotion that runs from July 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026. It covers the first year only, requires an annual commitment and applies only to existing Microsoft 365 customers on an eligible Business plan. Microsoft may change or cancel it at any time. Business Standard and Business Premium with Copilot are bundles with the Microsoft 365 plan, while the add-on and enterprise versions need a separate qualifying license.
Agent and connector use is metered rather than included for Copilot Chat users, and Copilot Cowork is metered on every business plan. Microsoft publishes no rates for the metered items. How Much Does GitHub Copilot Cost?
GitHub Copilot costs $0 on Free, $10 a month on Pro, $39 on Pro+ and $100 on Max. Teams pay $19 per seat for Business and $39 for Enterprise. All paid plans now include monthly AI credits worth $0.01 each, and code completions do not use credits.
Plan | Price | Monthly AI credits | Credit value (my arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|
Free | $0 | Limited allowance | n/a |
Student | $0 for verified students | Allowance, amount not stated | n/a |
Pro | $10 a month | 1,500 | $15 |
Pro+ | $39 a month | 7,000 | $70 |
Max | $100 a month | 20,000 | $200 |
Business | $19 per seat | 1,900 per user | $19 |
Enterprise | $39 per seat | 3,900 per user | $39 |
GitHub’s documentation prices each credit at $0.01, which means a $10 budget buys 1,000 credits. By that math, individual plans include more credit value than they cost: Pro gives $15 for $10, Pro+ gives $70 for $39 and Max gives $200 for $100. Business and Enterprise seats get credits equal to their price, and usage beyond the shared organization pool is billed at $0.01 per credit.
GitHub replaced “premium requests” with AI credits, so older pricing guides describe a different system. Pro+ and Max also add third-party coding agents such as Claude and OpenAI Codex, which Free and Pro do not include. Unlimited inline suggestions come with every paid plan. For how this compares with a rival editor, see our Cursor pricing guide and the Cursor vs GitHub Copilot comparison.

Can You Cancel Copilot or Get a Refund?
Yes. Microsoft business subscriptions are canceled in the Microsoft 365 admin center, some carry a cancellation fee, and data is deleted on cancellation. GitHub personal plans keep working until the end of the billing cycle, with no proration. Microsoft’s business page notes a 7-day window for a prorated refund.
A few rules differ by product:
Microsoft business plans: All options auto-renew, and the page notes a 7-day cancellation window for a prorated refund. Cancellation policies vary by customer status and product, and some subscriptions carry a cancellation fee.
Microsoft trials: The one-month trial on Business Standard and Premium needs a credit card and converts to a paid plan unless you cancel during the trial.
GitHub personal plans: Upgrades take effect immediately, and you pay the new price minus what you already paid. Downgrades start next cycle and are generally not prorated.
GitHub teams: Seats are billed at the end of each monthly cycle, and new seats are billed immediately, prorated for the rest of the cycle.
GitHub overlap: If your employer assigns you a Business or Enterprise seat, your personal plan is canceled automatically and you get a prorated refund.
Personal GitHub accounts can set budgets with email alerts at 75%, 90% and 100%, but budgets do not stop license charges. Sources: Microsoft’s business pricing page and GitHub’s billing documentation.
