Flapping Airplanes Founders

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 25, 2026 | Flapping Airplanes, an AI lab founded about a year ago, raised a $1 billion Series A round co-led by Index Ventures and Lux Capital, the company announced Oct. 21, according to TechCrunch. The round reportedly values the company at $6 billion, a figure TechCrunch attributes to a Bloomberg report.

Sequoia, GV and Kleiner Perkins, all earlier backers, also took part, per TechCrunch, which lists Valor, Atreides, A* and Nvidia among the company's investors as well. Index partner Mark Xu is joining the board, Tech Funding News reports. The lab's earlier seed round was $180 million at a $1.5 billion valuation, announced about nine months before this one, TechCrunch says. What Flapping Airplanes Is Building

The company is building AI models meant to need far less training data and computing power. In a company post on X, the founders wrote: "We imagine a world where models can be intelligent without ingesting half the internet," according to The Daily Star. Its founders describe a "megakernel" framework that packs jobs such as training and inference into a single program running on a GPU, per TechCrunch. Our guide to AI inference explains why that workload matters for chip use. Tech Funding News reports the lab has no product on sale, and that the performance claims are the founders' own.

The three founders are Aidan Smith, Asher Spector and Ben Spector. Smith is a Thiel Fellow who worked at Neuralink, and the Spectors studied at Stanford, according to TechCrunch. Ben Spector also founded Prod, a student-run startup accelerator. Tech Funding News says the team is a couple of dozen people working in person in San Francisco.

Analysis: How the Round Compares With the Seed

The $6 billion valuation is four times the $1.5 billion at the seed round ($6 billion divided by $1.5 billion). The Series A is about 5.6 times the size of the seed ($1 billion divided by $180 million), and the two rounds together total $1.18 billion. If the $6 billion figure includes the new money, as Tech Funding News describes it, the round equals about 17% of the company ($1 billion divided by $6 billion). That share depends on how the valuation is defined, which the coverage we reviewed does not spell out.

Several things are not known. The valuation is reported, not confirmed in the coverage we read. The company has no product on sale, and Asher Spector told TechCrunch in February he could not give a timeline for commercialization, per Tech Funding News. Revenue and the use of funds are not disclosed. Tech Funding News also notes the round comes after chip stocks in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index lost more than $1.6 trillion in under two weeks, per Reuters, and as investors question AI data center debt.
